KARACHI:

A large quantity of fake drugs was seized and three suspect arrested during a raid on a counterfeit medicines factory in Baldia Town’s Baloch Mohalla on Monday, while a separate viral video allegedly showing police assaulting men and women during the operation triggered fresh questions.

A joint team of Keamari district police and the SIU conducted the raid in the limits of Baldia Town police station. During the operation, three factory workers-identified as Muhammad Farooqi, Muhammad Faizan and Zohaib Ali-were arrested. However, the factory owner, Siddiq, and his son Zaid Siddiq fled the scene.

Police officials said heavy consignments of counterfeit medicines packed in cartons were recovered from the factory. Cases have been registered against all suspects, and raids are underway to arrest the absconders. Officials added that Siddiq and his son had been running the factory for a long time and that Siddiq had previously been arrested multiple times in similar cases.

Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media allegedly shows uniformed police officers and plainclothes individuals beating women and men with batons during the raid in Baldia Town. The footage quickly went viral, drawing public criticism.

Keamari SSP Amjad Sheikh stated that he was unaware of the viral video. Separately, the SIU police team denied any involvement, clarifying that the operation seen in the video was not carried out by SIU and that the unit had no connection to the alleged action.

Police officials said investigations are underway to determine the facts surrounding the viral video and the conduct of those involved.
