The Met Office has warned more heavy rain and flooding will hit Britain as Storm Ingrid continues to batter parts of the country.

Northern Ireland and the South West of England have been issued with yellow weather warnings, as up to 80mm of rain is expected to bring flooding and disruption to transport.

The warning will come into place at 3pm on Monday and will last until 12pm on Tuesday.

The weather service warned damage could be caused to homes and businesses through flooding, while some communities could be cut off.

Delays and cancellations to train and bus services are likely, while difficult driving conditions could lead to some road closures.

“Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, will affect parts of southern and southwest England as well as southern and mid Wales from Monday afternoon, through Tuesday morning before clearing to heavy showers later on Tuesday,” the Met Office said.

“Rainfall totals are expected to reach 20-30mm widely, with 50-80mm likely across higher ground, especially Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).

“With wet conditions prior to this period, the rain will fall onto saturated ground, accentuating flooding impacts in places. Strong southeasterly winds are also likely.”

In Wales, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan will be affected.

In the West Midlands, Herefordshire, Shropshire and in London & South East England, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire, Southampton, West Berkshire.

A yellow warning is issued depending on how likely or how severe the conditions are.

The Met Office confirmed that this particular warning was for low likelihood and a medium impact.

The conditions come as part of Storm Ingrid, the second storm to batter areas of the UK after Storm Goretti earlier this month.

Sections of Teignmouth Grand Pier collapsed and were washed away after being battered with 60mph winds during the storm on Saturday night.

Devon town mayor, Cate Williams, said: “It has lost part of the pier structure itself, which has dissolved and gone away into the sea.

“It’s an old pier and it was needing some attention and I suppose age and wear and tear has taken its toll.

“It has survived many weather conditions as well as world wars. It’s sad when you look at it now to see some of it now missing.”

The treacherous conditions are expected to last until Tuesday.
